Kutch is one of India’s largest districts. Surrounded by the Arabian Sea and the salt encrusted desert wilderness of the Rann of Kutch, this district is the last frontier of many crafts and traditions that have changed little over the centuries.
Best described as a cradle of Craftsmanship; Kutch is the land of weaving, block-printing, bandhini tie –and-dye, rogan-painting and various styles of embroidery, pottery, wood-carving, metal-crafts, shell-work and other handicrafts.
The district also has a long history dating from the Harapan Civilization that thrived at cities like Dholavira in the 3rd and 2nd milliennia BC to the Jadeja Rajput rulers who reigned from the 1540s to the merger of states in the 1940s and endowed their princely state with forts, palaces, temple and other monuments of historic and religious importance.
For those interested in natural history, Kutch is the habitat of the endangered and interesting wildlife species like the Indian wild Ass. This district is widely reputated as a paradise for birdwatchers. Besides the reservoirs in the state that are important habitats for water and waterside birds, and flyways for migrating birds, Kutch is also the breeding ground for critically endangered birds like the Indian bustard and the lesser florican.

Narayan Sarovar :
Narayan Sarovar is one of the most sacred place of Hindu pilgrimage. At Narayan Sarovar are five holy lakes with a shiva temple built around one of them. The temple and its surrounding lakes offer a truly heavenly sight. It is one of just five lakes in India, the other four being Mansarovar at Kailash, Bindusarovar at Bhuvaneshwar, Pushkar in Rajasthan and Pampa in South India. The Narayan Sarovar Sanctuary, which is also located here, enjoys the rarity of being an uncommon eco-system in an arid zone, which support 15 endangered species of wildlife.
Koteshwar :
Koteshwar is well-known for its Shiva temple. This is a cave temple, which has many stone idols that are naturally formed. It derives its name from one of Lord Shiva’s names “Kotilingeshwar”. The temple attracts numerous devotees of Shiva, especially in the months of August and September.
Lakhpat :
Lakhpat is a fortified town with, several gates and bastions made of stone. It is situated on the India-Pakistan border at the junction of Kori Creek and the Rann of Kutch. The place derives its name from its founder Rao Lakha. It is believed that in ancient times, it was so prosperous that it earned revenues in “lakhs”.
Mata Na Madh :
Mata na madh is a site of great religious importance, known for the worship of goddess Ashapura Maa. It is believed that descendents of the Jadeja Dynasty became the first rulers of Kutch because of the blessings of the goddess Ashapura.The Goddess is a revered deity of the royal family. Thousands of devotees from all walks of life and every nook and corner of the country pay a visit to this place during Navratri.
Chhari-Dhandh :
Chhari-Dhandh is a spectacular fresh water wetland in the grassland of Banni, renowned for the thousands of migratory and resident birds that flock here in winter. More then 20,000 species of birds including flamingos, cranes, pelicans, eagles and ducks pay visit every year.
Dhinodhar Mountain :
Dhinodhar is one of the highest mountain peaks of Kutch , often termed as the ‘Himalaya of Kutch’. A volcanic mountain by origin, Dhinodhar also has a famous Hindu shrine – a lord Shiva temple at its peak. There is a consistent and steady flow of tourists to Dhinodhar from all over the country as well as foreign visitors.
Than (MONASTERY) :
Than is located at the foothills of Mt. Dhinodhar and is known for its spectacular monastery. Both Dhinodhar and Then are historical sites of great religious significance .
Kera :
Kera is known for its, ancient Lord Shiv Temple. It is the most attractive monument from the 12th century from the Solanki era.
Tunda Vandh :
Tunda Vandh is famous for beautiful mud-huts named “Bhungas”. These “Bhungas”care of varied types and demonstrate a vast variety in art. They are true symbols of the culture of Kutch, Tunda Vandh is a hub of myriad “Bhungas” of different and variegated shapes sizes.
Ludiya :
Ludiya is famous for a wide variety of remarkable Kutchi mud huts known as “Bhungas”. It is also very rich in various other varieties of art and handicraft.
India Bridge, Vigha Kot :
India bridge located at the Indo-Pak border is also in close proximity to the famous “Kala Dungar” near Dhrobana village of Khavda. The ‘Kala Dungar’ spreads across 956 hectares and is 1,460 feet in height. It is of great spiritual importance, due to Guru Dattatreya, who is locally called as “Pachchhmai Pir”. It therefore attracts a large number of devotees.
Dholavira :
Dholavira in Kutch district is a massive archeological site that belongs to the Harappan Civilization. It dates back to 2900 BC and is known for exceptional town planning and engineering. Among many other attractions, a special feature of Dholavira is a signboard in Indus script, which is believed to be one of the oldest in the world. The sign board has 10 large-sized symbols inscribed on it. A mystery surrounds this sign board as the meaning of these symbols is yet to be deciphered. Inside the general fortification, are three distinct complexes – an Acropolis, a middle town and a lower town – with various gateways, built-up areas, street system, wells and large open spaces.
